I loved Sarkis, he truly respects women in his inner monologue which you can tell the author is a woman. My one misgiving is that she kept referring to herself as old and past her prime, and she’s the same age as me (36) which made me give my phone the side-eye more than once but I recognize she’s just repeating the cruel things her terrible family has abused her with. Halla is a fun character, she gets a little trying with her constant self-doubt but I think a lot of women will relate to her caregiver/selfless attitude.

Gives them so much personality! Bravo! Story-wise, this was a great listen. I loved all her voices for the characters very distinct and easy to tell who is speaking. Jesse is the first female narrator I’ve listened to who manages to make the male lead sound legitimately sexy. In fact I hope there is a next installment and we get to see the other swords. I wanted to know how it ends and I'd listen to the next installment. BUT there was no point I wanted to put the book down and not come back. I wish the romance didn't overtake the plot so much. Bottom line, too much sappy, bodice ripper romance in my adventure novel. 15 year olds angst in old bodies that should know better. This is an attempt to increase romantic tension but doesn't work because to readers there's no suspense regarding what the respective other one is feeling, which means that to us the characters just look weepy and contrivedly dense. They're both way too insecure for 40 year olds and we're given way too much time with their navel gazing. Unfortunately the story was disappointing, or rather the characters. The narrator is amazing: Sarkis' northern accent is fabulous, and the bird is one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard. Awesome narration, good story, a bit too romancy
