But there are these moments of calm between, where in spite of the chaos outside, we see relationships in a sense of calm. Maybe there’s a place the leads need to go, or a letter than needs delivering. Of course, with near constant storms, there are many points in the novel with the ‘plot’ needs to wait for the storms to pass. There is a constant threat of war on the horizon for these people, and their secrecy makes perfect sense, given all they have to lose. It’s the few months of calm seas when every able bodied individual on the island takes up arms to defend it. Ithicana is a lush jungle, separated from the mainland and kept safe most of the year by tides and storms. Few books do as good a job at setting a scene and making the weather and climate matter in every aspect of the story. I think the most interesting part of this novel in the work done to describe Ithicana. I was a bit disappointed at the reveal that they had only been poisoned, but the book kept up this theme of deception and Lara’s skill at poisoning throughout the novel, which made it feel authentic and in character. The intro of the book was very strong, with our lead Lara murdering her sisters over dinner so she can marry (and assassinate) the King of Ithicana. But my recommendation seemed to show that it might be worth a read, and I thought, why not.īut I have to say, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
